I attended a meeting of the organization, Women In Trucking, while at the
Mid America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky 2010. The enthusiasm was
quite evident throughout the meeting room. Sadly, I was late for the meeting
( I had no idea where it was so had to ask) but I do not think I missed much
of it. When I walked into the room I was warmly greeted and found my way to
a seat where I was welcomed by the ladies sitting around there.
I had registered for the photo shoot the day before so did not have to
interrupt listening to the speakers while I took care of that. The room was
full of red shirts with the logo Women In Trucking. Very encouraging for
those who may have felt there weren’t many of us around.
When I got seated Ellen Voie, President of WIT, was speaking. She is a very
enthusiastic lady. She was announcing the awards presentations for 3 million
milers, 2 million milers and 1 million milers and Anne Ferro, Administrator
to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, handed each recipient her
award. I was proud to shake her hand when I received my 2 million mile
award. The award is a form to fill out for a $25.00 gift certificate to be
redeemed at certain stores. I am sure I will spend mine at Barnes and
Nobles.
After the award presentations we all proceeded out the south wing doors for
the Women In Trucking Salute photo shoot. It was a sea of women in red
shirts! We were trying to beat the Netherlands shoot in 2004 with a count of
416 but our count was 290 < >. Not a bad showing and it did beat the North
American record. Watch out next year!
Following the photo shoot we proceeded back up to the meeting room for thank
you’s and door prizes which included an iPod, a couple of gps’s, some model
trucks (very nice ones) just to name a few of the prizes.
I was very impressed with the enthusiasm of the organizers as well as the
interest and satisfaction of the attendees. This is going to continue on
it’s upward swing. Membership will grow as more women are made aware of the
community this organization can give to it’s members. Not being a member YET
there is much I still have to learn about Women In Trucking. I will become a
member soon because I feel that, while still in it’s infancy, this group of
women will achieve much in the progress of the women who truck (in the many
aspects).
